With pollen levels forecast to be high or very high across much of the UK over the next few days, many are already feeling the significant impact. The fine powder released by grasses, trees, and plants is causing the familiar discomfort of itchy eyes, relentless sneezing, dripping noses, scratchy throats, and persistent headaches. So, what can you do to find relief?

Hay fever, also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, is an allergic reaction to pollen and many people are experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Frequent sneezing and coughing
  • A runny or blocked nose
  • Itchy, red, or watery eyes
  • An itchy throat, mouth, nose, and ears
  • Headaches and feeling tired

While these symptoms can be very uncomfortable, in most cases, they do not require a visit to your GP.

How to manage your hay fever at home:

Please visit the official NHS hay fever advice page here: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/hay-fever/

The NHS provides excellent, comprehensive advice on managing hay fever. We strongly encourage you to visit their dedicated hay fever page for guidance on:

  • Pollen avoidance tips: Simple steps like keeping windows closed, showering after being outside, and checking the pollen forecast can make a big difference.
  • Over-the-counter remedies: Your local pharmacist can advise on a wide range of effective treatments, including:
    • Antihistamine tablets or liquids: These help block the allergic reaction. Non-drowsy options are widely available.
    • Nasal sprays (steroid or antihistamine): Excellent for reducing nasal congestion and inflammation.
    • Eye drops: Specifically target itchy and watery eyes.
  • Understanding when to seek further advice: The NHS page clearly outlines when it might be appropriate to speak to a pharmacist or, in rare cases, your GP.

Also, try to avoid:

  • cutting grass or walking on grass
  • keeping fresh flowers in the house
  • smoking or being around smokers
  • drying clothes outside

By following the advice on the NHS website and speaking to your local pharmacist, most hay fever sufferers can find significant relief and manage their symptoms effectively without the need for a GP consultation. This helps us keep appointments available for those with more urgent or complex health concerns.
